This quote is very important in understanding the text. Siddhartha Jr. is very unhappy living with Siddhartha and Vasudeva, and he always lets them know by acting defiant and disrespectful. Everytime Siddhartha tries to show him love and affection he shoves him away and becomes meaner. The love and benediction that Siddhartha shows his son causes him to become a rebel. By the end Siddhartha Jr. is so upset with living with the old men that has a furious argument with his father and runs away back to the town where he was born. This is important to regular life too, because it shows that a parent must show love, but at the same time must use discipline or the child will become recluse.
This quote is the explanation of why Siddhartha's son rejects Siddhartha as a father. Kamala raises their son in a wealthy lifestyle. Their son is very spoiled and is not accustomed to the poor ways of Siddhartha when he is left to live with him. Siddhartha's son already has an established lifestyle and he only knows how to live this way. Just as water will go to water, Siddhartha's son goes back to the village in order to continue living wealthy. Vasudeva tells Siddhartha to ask the river why his son wishes to leave him because the river knows his son's destiny and Siddhartha cannot prevent him from learning from it. If his son is to be protected from all evils, his son will not acheive the necessary experiences the river teaches.
